How does Step Change work?
A small group of ambitious entrepreneurs from non-competing businesses attend six interactive half day sessions over an eight-month period to help them improve their business in a range of key areas.
Step Change facilitators and hosts are FEO peers who have successfully completed the programme and having seen the benefits, agreed to "pay it forward" by inspiring others to succeed.
FEO's belief is that entrepreneurs learn the most from each other and so our peer-to-peer model is most effective.

Do I qualify?
Yes, provided you
- Are a business owner/lead entrepreneur of a private sector enterprise
- Employ a team of at least 5 people
- Are based in Hull or the East Riding of Yorkshire
- Have an appetite to grow your business over the next 5 years
- Want to create more local jobs within your company
- Can commit to all 6 session dates and their follow up “homework” tasks

How much does it cost?
The programme is free of charge to FEO members but we do ask for commitment to attending all sessions and completing associated homework tasks, in order to get the best results for you and your company
Below, FEO member Martin Lauer shares his experience of the Step Change programme.
In 2013 I decided to apply for the first ever FEO Step Change For Growth programme as I was becoming frustrated that my business wasn’t growing as fast as I felt it should be, and I couldn’t understand why? My business had a good profile, loyal customers and staff and a good offering – so why was growth slower than my expectations? Being an active member of FEO I thought I would take the opportunity to enrol onto Step Change, which is a peer-led course. Now 5 years later, we have experienced a financial growth of 45% year on year and increased our staff headcount by 21 FTE’s.
Step Change For Growth taught me that how I was feeling was normal - and that by implementing the advice and lessons from the workshops, I could put rocket fuel into the direction, culture and sales performance of the business. Since taking part in Step Change, I have been ‘paying it forward’ by delivering the course to entrepreneurs just like me – who want to grow – who want to employ more people – who want to make a difference to the local economy – who want the support network and confidence to take ‘the Step’.
